Cop 3 - Powerpoint + Notes so Far and Statement of intent

After presenting the jumping point of my research and ideas, I continued to add notes to my PowerPoint so I could keep track of feedback and my development.

One of the main things I’m struggling with right now is how to write a question for an essay that will be mostly about exploring a new way of visualising and interacting with data, I’ve emailed Rob for some advice on this as I can’t find many examples to reference online.

Statement of intent:
I might need to revise this later.

Through research and investigative practical work, I will explore the possibilities of a new way of presenting and receiving data/information inspired by the memory technique called ‘Method of Loci’. I will create a 360 video animation using 2d; This will both explore a new way of visualising data as well as being a novel approach to the 360 video. The Method of Loci is also known as The Mind Palace technique which lends itself clearly to the concept of creating a space in a way that has not yet been ventured into in this way. Considering the type of softwares i both have access to and skills in, I predict i will use photoshop, procreate and premier pro to create this project. Initially, I think I will need to focus on the flow of the animation to ensure that the information will be received at the right time by controlling the attention of the watcher. To do this, I will need to experiment with different pacing as well as different ways to visually categorise the information into categories (such as using colour coding or different sounds). To measure the success/impact of my results i will use surveys to record different viewer’s experiences after monitoring their viewing. Essentially, I intend to be led by my practice and use the essay to record and critique this new way of using and watching animation. To develop my understanding of data visualisation, I will research into the theoretical side of perception; this will involve presenting a clear understanding of the memory technique, why it’s used and how this protect contrasts with or echos how data is traditionally presented. I will also research how 360 videos are generally created and why the spatial element adds to an immersive experience. I also need to clarify how 2d differs from 3D animation for this purpose by which i mean if I need to warp the perspective before stitching the animation together. In York, there is a 360 video exhibition on Van Gogh and I intend to use case studies like this to back research and inform what makes successful animation of this kind.
